Trails, Rails, Hills & Tales - 'The Donegal Cowboy' - Skip Gorman with Katie MacLeod
"Skip Gorman’s new cd captures a spirit I haven’t heard in a long time. I loved it. ” -Tom Carter, PhD folklorist and member of the Fuzzy Mt. String Band.
Through his music, Skip Gorman brings back to life the workaday world of the cowboys of the American West. His music is not the music of the Hollywood cowboy, but rather the simple, yet beautifully poignant music that was performed around campfires by cowboys and westward settlers in the 19th century. Gorman brings to the music a scholar’s knowledge of the cowboy’s Celtic, Spanish and Afro-American roots as well as the personal experience gained by working as a cowboy on a ranch in Wyoming, along with an exquisite touch as a singer, guitarist, fiddler and mandolinist.
Having grown up on the outskirts of Washington D.C, Kate has resided in the region of Utah for decades; home of rich folklore, the roaming grounds of Butch Cassidy and his Wild Bunch and the land from where Utah Phillips took his name. Her western migration has fueled her appreciation and understanding of the American experience, its varied landscapes and cultures.
She performs her music with guitar, violin and harmonica and has studied many styles of ethnic violin in addition to extensive classical training from where she has developed a unique expression with her fiddle playing.
