A Traditional Music Journey 1600-2000

$ 16.00

A Traditional Music Journey 1600-2000 From Erris to Mullaghban - Máire Nic Domhnaill Gairbhí Paper, 143 pp., index, notes, musical notation for songs, photos. Written by a musician and former secretary of Comhaltas Ceolteóirí Éireann, Máire Garvey’s book is an important contribution to the history and preservation of Irish music. As the 20th century fades from view, this documentation takes on even more importance. Here, the author recounts her memories of women keeners at her grandfather’s funeral in 1932, house dance-parties, travelling street pipers and singers, fife and drum bands, the impact of the first commercial recordings that came from America, and the excitement of becoming a sixteen year-old fiddle player in the local ceili band. The book is also a valuable record of traditional music in Dublin from the late 1940s onward, but more than anything it is a history of traditional music in Connacht and South Ulster, with an imaginary wandering among the region’s singers and musicians, poets and patrons, such as the harper Turlough Carolan, Anthony Raftery and Douglas Hyde.
